Hello,
I am Thomas Hobbes a political philosopher. I have squared the circle and cubed the sphere. I have also had to flee Britain because I had ticked off all the political parties. Some people believe that I am pessimistic, but I disagree! I believe that I am only portraying humans as they really are, and people are upset because they know what I say is the truth. I believe that when a person is born, they only know survival. They do not know wrong from right, they only know they need to survive. They only know that they need to get what they need and want, and if somebody gets in their way to that goal, they may die. Once they have what they need, they know that they'll have to fight to keep it for themselves. What makes human act as they do, is their own survival. When two people are trying to survive off food and they are fearful that the other party will try to kill them for all of the food, a third party is necessary for keeping the two parties alive. The third party takes the food and evenly gives it out between the two parties. Even if the third party abuses their power, it is better to have a government than not to have one. Without a government, humans would end up killing each other to survive; thus we need order to keep us from following our basic instinct to survive by anyways necessary.
Humans will sometimes do anything just to get an object they want, they may not even use it. An example of this would be the day of Black Friday. On this day, Americans will go to big box stores that promise lower prices on items that they usually do not need, yet they fight over the items as if their survival depended on it. People may fight over surplus items they do not need, but when two parties are fighting over items they really need, a third party is needed, even if it is oppressive. A man named Trujillo ruled the Dominica Republic from 1930-1961. He ruled a very oppressive government. He was able to keep power because he made sure nobody else in the country got power. He abused his power, but the people still had a place to call home. Even though his government was corrupt, it was better having a government than not having one like the boys in Lord Of The Flies. They had two leaders, one named Jack, who was very much like me, and one named Ralph, who was very much like naive Locke. Since Jack and Ralph were having disagreements, the whole situation would have turned out much better if they had a third party deciding all their disagreements, but since they didn't, Jack's style of leading one the loyalty of the boys. I believe that Jack represents that humans' only instinct is to survive, and that if we go back to a state of nature, we shall only survive by doing whatever we can.
